East Staffordshire Borough Council has received funding from the County Sports Partnership’s ‘Activities Across Staffordshire Fund’, to develop an England Hockey Programme called “Back to Hockey”.
Back to Hockey is open to females of all ages and provides a gentle introduction or re-introduction to hockey. Have you enjoyed playing hockey at school or university? Have you stopped playing and would love to start again? Are you looking for a fun, new activity? Then “Back to Hockey” is for you!!
The course runs for an 8 week period starting on Thursday 20th September 2012 and for the next 7 consecutive Thursdays after. The sessions take place between 5.30 pm – 6.30 pm and are to be held at Shobnall Leisure Complex.
The sessions involve an 8 week block of coaching programmes followed by a mini tournament with a team of experienced and novice hockey players. Hockey is a great way for women to get fit, have some fun, learn a new skill and meet new friends without the pressure to perform in a supportive environment. All equipment is provided, but if you have your own feel free to bring it along.
The project will be run in partnership with Barton Hockey Club, Burton Hockey Club and Wulfric Ladies Hockey Club. These clubs will be sending players to the sessions to support the new players and to hopefully welcome some new hockey players to their clubs at the end of the course.
Councillor Bernard Peters, Deputy Leader for Service Commissioning, said: “Back to Hockey is a different way to get fit and make new friends. The success of Team GB’s ladies hockey team may have inspired the ladies of East Staffordshire to try a new sport or return to a sport they used to play”.
Councillor David Leese, Deputy Leader for Partnerships said: “The project has established links with three local hockey clubs who are looking to welcome new female players. These links offer an Olympic legacy in the new skills the ladies will be taught.”
