Sun 14th to Sun 21st February – Half Term Days Out at Conkers
Jan 21st, 2010 | By Chris Towland | Category: Conkers, Whats OnGreat days out for all the family at Conkers in the National Forest during February half term. There’s lots to do for all the family. Outdoors there 120 acres to explore including our train linking the Discovery and Waterside Centres, the assault course, adventure play and lakeside and woodland walks. Indoors discover our indoor Enchanted Forest Adventure Play area, interactive exhibits, cafes and our gift shops.
To celebrate ‘National Nest Box Week’ which coincides with half term this year, we will be offering nest box building workshops – a great way to provide homes for dozens of species, from Blue Tits to Barn Owls. Talking of Barn Owls, our resident feathered friend ‘Misty’ will be coming out of her aviary to meet visitors – you might be able to hold or feed her!
Our temporary exhibitions will be of interest to those with an eye for colour and the science of plant evolution. The National Forest Art Gallery (situated adjacent to the Trading Post Gift Shop) is hosting a display of very diverse, yet colourful works from 3 members of the Morph Dynamic Creatives group.
Within the ‘Tree of Life Hall’ we are hosting a small exhibition that is currently touring nationwide, entitled ‘Questioning Evolution? Evolving Answers!’ Visitors to the exhibition will be able to find out how flowers evolved to take such complicated forms, how agriculture has put evolution to work since its ancient beginnings 10,000 years ago and how scientists used the principles of evolution to produce the Green Revolution.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Susannah Lydon, from the University of Nottingham, who will be offering workshops during the half term week on Monday 15th, entitled ‘What’s A Fossil? and on Friday 19th, entitled ‘D.I.Y. D.N.A.!’ – both from 10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m.
To compliment our theme of planting, Shena Cooper, author of the children’s books ‘The Secret Seed Society’ will be visiting on Tuesday 16th to read stories from the tales of Peter Parsnip and his friends, throughout the day. In-between stories, she will also be offering seed planting workshops.
Additionally, our Rangers will be offering a selection of self-led orienteering challenges, for those who wish to explore what they have learnt about indoors, outside in the grounds of Conkers. Throughout the week, they will be offering younger visitors the opportunity to create some ‘animal magic’, windmills, rain catchers and other crafty activities – too numerous to mention here!
Whatever the weather come and have a great day out at Conkers.
