The National Brewery Centre Heavy Horse Show

The National Brewery Centre Heavy Horse Show takes place on Sunday 12th September 2010.

The competition, which celebrates the iconic Heavy Horse breeds from around the region, will see an impressive total of 48 horses compete. Cllr David Leese, Mayor of East Staffordshire will officially open the event, which will include a variety of different entry classes, giving visitors the perfect chance to get up close to the magnificent creatures.

These breeds, that include the Shire, Clydesdale, Suffolk and Percheron, are extremely large and their strength makes them suitable for drawing heavy loads. Up until the mid 1960s, they will have been a common sight in Britain’s towns and cities, delivering beer to local pubs.

The event is being judged by one of the Country’s top horse breeders, Tom Fountain, who, over the past 50 years, has won countless awards and accolades in show and breeding competitions. There will be six horse entry classes, ranging from yearlings to young handlers between 10 and 16 years old. The best of each class and runners-up will receive cash prizes.

Kim Clarke, general manager of The National Brewery Centre, said: “We’re really excited about the show and it will be fantastic to see so many heavy horses gathered together at our centre.”

“I’m told by our head horseman, Andrew Whetton, that 48 horses is a really good turnout and that the competition will be tough.”

Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Centre’s countless exhibits and attractions, including The Brewing Experience red carpet tour; beer tasting (adults only); a vehicle collection; a working steam engine and interactive displays – all brought to life by the Centre’s team of character actors.

It is expected that the event will draw in a large number of visitors and the organisers are recommending that anyone wishing to dine at the Brewery Tap bar and restaurant book well in advance. There will also be a barbeque and an outside bar, serving a range of drinks, including fabulous real ales brewed on site.

Entrance costs £8.50 for adults (concessions £7.50) and children get in for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult/concession. Doors open to the public from 10am and the first class show will begin at 11am.
