Fire Place Dangers!

Wood-burning fireplace with burning log. Some other logs become dried and heated up around the fire so that they will be burned better.Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning of the potential dangers of having equipment that require attention located above fireplaces.

Mick Archer, Area Commander for East Staffordshire says, “Increasingly now when we visit people’s homes we’re seeing items such as flat screen TVs located above fire places. This poses a fire risk when they require attention - whether it be to switch them on or off, or even dusting them, as people get too close to the fire in the fireplace, potentially causing their clothing to ignite. Luckily we’ve had no incidents of this nature as yet in the County, however there have been in other areas of the country.”

Mick Archer continues to say “I’d advise members of the public to look at an alternative location for these items to remove this risk or if this isn’t an option, ensure that you take the necessary precautions, for example ensure there is no fire burning when you need to stand in front of the fireplace.”
