Fire at Alton Towers last night
Crews were called to a fire at Alton Towers theme park last night.
The call for the incident was received at 7.36pm and the first pump from Cheadle arrived at the incident at 7.51pm. Further appliances from Ipstones, Uttoxeter and Longton followed. The fire involved the roof of one of the Sky Ride stations, which was well alight when firefighters arrived. More appliances were then requested which came from Leek, Longton and Stone. At the height of the incident there were eight appliances and approximately 50 firefighters.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using both main jets and hose reel jets. Additional water was provided from the on site lake. Relief crews were requested at midnight and these came from Burton, Newcastle, Burslem, Hanley, Rugeley and Ashley.
Bob Dagless, Area Commander said “No firefighters were committed inside the building because there was a possibility of the roof collapsing and so the fire was fought externally. We managed to keep the fire confined to the roof space where it started and this is where the majority of the damage has been caused. The fire was brought under control by approximately 4.30am however two crews still remain at the scene this morning, damping down and checking the area for any remaining pockets of fire.”
There has been an investigation into the cause this morning, which has concluded that the fire was started accidentally by a halogen lamp.
