Burton Murals Gain an Award
Lock Murals Prove Key to Award Success
Stunning murals painted at Dallow Lock, Burton upon Trent, on the Trent and Mersey Canal have achieved a third place in the prestigious British Waterways Renaissance Awards.
The £14,000 project, lead by Shobnall Parish Council and supported by the Parks and Countryside team at East Staffordshire Borough Council, was up against nationwide multi-million pound competition for the awards, where it came Commended in the Recreation and Tourism category.
The mural was the brainchild of Coral Beresford, Chairman of Shobnall Parish Council, who entered the awards as a special thank you to Matt Reeves, the Birmingham-based artist who created the mural to celebrate the heritage and history of the town as well as its aspirations for the future.
“Burton owed much of its early prosperity to the Trent and Mersey Canal, as it allowed Burtons Fine Ales and Beers to reach national and international markets,” said Councillor Philip Atkins, Deputy Leader for Health and Leisure.
“With the decline of brewing as the major industry in Burton, we hope that award-winning initiatives like the Dallow Mural and the Kingfisher Project will once again help the Trent and Mersey Canal bring prosperity to the town, through tourism and regeneration.”
