£40,000 Makes After School Project Streets Ahead
School children in Burton on Trent will soon be able to take part in a variety of sports and physical activities in the evenings after the Council secured £40,000 funding for a new initiative.
The Staffordshire Children’s Fund has awarded East Staffordshire Borough Council the money for a two-year period to deliver their new Streets Ahead project in the Victoria and Anglesey wards.
Streets Ahead aims to provide physical activities to young people, aged between six and 16, during the evenings, in a range of locations from local parks such as Queen Street, Anglesey and Unity Park, to community, youth and leisure centres.
The project will be launched at Burton’s Shobnall Leisure Complex on Saturday, October 11th between 12.00pm and 4.00pm, by the Mayor of East Staffordshire, Councillor Liz Staples.
As part of the launch residents are invited down to the complex to try out some of the activities and sports that will be offered through the Streets Ahead initiative such as football and basketball, along with the new and exciting activities which include Handball, Street or Bhangra dance and the eagerly awaited Speedminton, a new sport that will be demonstrated at the event.
Councillor Bernard Peters, Deputy Leader for Health and Leisure, said: “This is an exciting new project that will not only provide valuable entertainment for young people to enjoy in the evenings but also encourage them to take up more healthy activities helping us become a healthier and happy borough.
“I am proud to be involved in yet another opportunity secured by ESBC to support the young people of Burton and be associated with the Council’s consistent determination to provide such facilities for young people.”
Sesh Mumtaz Streets Ahead Co-ordinator, added: “This project will help give young people the opportunity to make most of their time in the evenings by enjoying physical activities in safe environments and also build relationships with other cultural communities.”
