Council Backs Annual Compost Campaign
Residents in East Staffordshire can learn all about the benefits of composting from this May as Council staff take part in a national campaign.
National Compost Awareness week launches on Sunday, May 4th and aims to highlight the importance of composting and the role it plays in helping to make the country more environmentally friendly.
It also aims to encourage the public and business communities alike to support composting at all scales.
Officers from the Council’s Environment Services team will be at the Plant Fair on Sunday, May 4th to promote Compost Awareness Week.
The Plant Fair is held at The Greenhouse Gardening and Environmental Centre, stapenhill Road, Burton upon Trent, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
The team will be available to answer questions on recycling and general waste related queries. A dedicated Home Composting Advisor will also be on hand to answer questions specifically on home composting and the home composting scheme that East Staffordshire Borough Council is signed up to.
Residents who attend can purchase soil conditioning compost and a limited number of water butts and kitchen caddies as well as plants and flowers.
Councillor Malcolm Barrett, Deputy Leader for Environment, said: “Composting is a very easy way to dramatically reduce the amount of household waste that is sent to landfill, which means less harmful liquids and greenhouse gases are produced to damage our environment.
“On a personal level it can also save you money and is a fun thing for families to work on together.”
