Pitch Project on Tour with £10,000 Funding
May 19th, 2010 | By Chris Towland | Category: Burton StuffAn “inspiring” East Staffordshire art project has been awarded £10,000 to be extended across the County as part of the celebrations for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The Arts East Staffs team, based at Burton’s Brewhouse Arts Centre, has secured £10,000 of Arts Council Funding to deliver „Away Pitch? – a project to designed to link sport and art together to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad and the Olympic Games.
East Staffordshire Borough Council?s arts and sports development teams have been working together to develop this project following the success of last year?s „Pitch? project that gained the Inspire Mark.
Pitch was a series of digital photographs that show local artists? work being exhibited in the homes of local sports representatives for a few weeks in 2009, the twist being that the sports people do not get to see the work before it is randomly selected and delivered to their homes. The outcome was photographed and videoed to become part of a final exhibition
The new „Away Pitch? project will expand on this idea combining art, sport and creative writing from across Staffordshire.
Councillor Bernard Peters, Deputy Leader for Environment and Leisure, said: “The original Pitch project proved to be an extraordinary success with a number of local sports representatives signing up to display the work of local artists and being recognised by the London 2012 organisers as a fresh, vibrant, exceptional project inspired by the Games coming to the UK.
“The Council is now very proud to be rolling the project out across the county so that more people can see the exceptional talent and potential we have in East Staffordshire, both in the art world and sporting arenas. I am sure everyone will be impressed by the content of the project.”
The final exhibition will be at the Brewhouse from Saturday, July 10th to Saturday, August 7th with a special, live launch event on Friday, July 23rd featuring displays of visual arts, photography, poetry and dance. The project will then tour across Staffordshire during 2010/11.
